When you're writing up the inital story, you don't have to go through all 3000 lines of dialoge, write up what every NPC in the game is going to say and so on and so on... before you start your game, all you really need is a basic plot outline. Take all the MAJOR events in the game, and place them on a simple timeline (i.e. The main character has to kill the evil king before she can go to the catacombs and get the hot air balloon, then she'll be able to get to the northlands and ...). You want your plot to be somewhat flexible, since you're inevitably going to have a few ideas as you're going along that you're going to want to throw in, plus you'll want some side quests to develop your characters, and so on.
