That world is also made using MegaTextures, a technology which layers the world with enormous single textures of 128,000x128,000 pixels that cover everything in the environment, streaming into memory as needed, rather than creating it with the usual method of using many smaller, discrete textures. It allows artists to be able to create and edit areas of the world without any danger of adversely affecting the game’s performance, and gives them huge opportunity to finesse and add unique detail. “The artists and designers have this ability to go in, build the game, figure out how it’s going to play and then add the personality,” says Carmack. “And the great part is, none of that has any impact on the stability or performance of the game. It’s really, really nice because usually when you go in and do the beauty pass, everything falls apart.”

Rebellion
Oxford-based games studio Rebellion founded in 1993 by the brothers Jason and Chris Kingsley.
The company has grown from a two-person outfit in the brothers' shared basement flat to become one of the biggest and most innovative studios within the European development community.
The company's first major success was in its work with the Aliens vs. Predator franchise, which the company gave birth to on the Atari Jaguar and then fully unleashed with the award-winning PC franchise entries. The company then established itself as more than just a coding house when it purchased the UK sci-fi comic line 2000 AD in 2000.
The company grew further through acquisitions, expanding its catalog of hit productions. In the summer of 2006 Rebellion purchased the Core Design studios (responsible for the Lara Croft Tomb Raider series) and Strangelite studios in Liverpool. 2007 was Rebellion's 15th anniversary and saw the company acquire the Awesome Studio from Ignition in March, and shortly after acquired Razorworks. 2008 saw a move to purpose built Studio facilities in Oxford, and several new project announcements.
