From April 3 to 4, 2009, NATO
celebrated its 60th anniversary in
Strasbourg and Baden-Baden. It comes at
a time of many challenges, such as the
strained relationship with Russia, the
mission in Afghanistan, the proposed
return of France into its military
command and the enlargement of the
alliance.
For the opponents to NATO, the event
was an opportunity to voice their
protest against the military, often
associated with an anti-capitalist,
civil rights and environmental agenda.
Anticipating a scenario of
demonstrations and blockades, with
potential rioting (not to mention the
terrorrist threat due to the presence of
political leaders), the authorities had
deployed exceptional security measures,
with tens of thousands of policemen and
security perimeters around all main
events locations.
The anti-NATO demonstrators have been
parked in a "camp" 6km outside
Strasbourg city center, under constant
police observation (incl. helicopters),
and their movements were closely
watched. Any attempt to reach the city
was rebuffed by strong police forces,
leading to a series of urban riots
during 3 days. The violence reached its
climax on Saturday, when a demonstration
had been allowed but only in the
autonomous port, an isolated area
surrounded by water. Violent
demonstrators, incl. the German Black
Blocks, clashed for hours with riot
police, smashing and burning buildings,
with peaceful demonstrators completely
overpowered.
Some activist groups had also planned
some non-violent actions within the city
in an attempt to disrupt the summit or
at least, draw attention on their
revendications, but very few succeeded.
