    • goals was to get students more actively involved in the learning process during class so that what we taught wouldn’t go in one ear and out the other. The downside of this approach: we can’t teach as much. The upside: students might actually remember something, making the sessions more useful. I started with English 101, developing a worksheet that students would complete during the library session. We’d teach a skill (like finding books or brainstorming search terms) and then they’d practice that skill with their research topic on the worksheet. Then we’d go onto the next skill and so on. The worksheet not only got them actively involved in class, but it gave them a record of what they’d tried so far in their research. Faculty really liked this idea and many collected the worksheets for a grade. The Head of the English Department stated that the quality of his students’ papers this semester was better than ever before.

I ended up replicating this method in the classes I taught in the social sciences, modifying the worksheet based on what I’d be teaching in each class. In all of these classes, the faculty members collected the worksheets for a grade, which was fantastic. And even better, the faculty members gave me feedback on what students seemed to understand and what they had trouble with. I felt like students were getting a lot more out of the session because they actually had something to do and, in the end, they had a product of their work and learning.

    • So take at least 4000 IU vitamin D daily, in cholecalciferol form.
    • Vitamin K also is important in bone and joint health. it works with vitamin D. I cant point to any specific research, but I expect its important. Take vitamin K2, MK7 100 mcg daily, or more. D and K must be taken with fat. Also take vitamin A from fish liver oil (not beta carotene) to balance the D and K, 25,000 units daily. A D and K work together.

Zinc also seems to play a role. I have read that zinc deficiency in monkeys causes disc deformities and increases risk of disc injury.

Some have said that methyl sulfonyl methane (MSM) is helpful in large doses of about 5-8 grams daily. Try it.

Take L-lysine and L-proline, and vitamin C, 1000mg or more daily for all. these nutrients are essential for collagen formation and repair. Discs are made of collagen.

Also take magnesium 400 mg daily, magnesium citrate. magnesium is necessary for bone health and most people are deficient.

I any case, you should take a quality multivitamin (from life extension, Now foods, jarrow etc). Do not take Centrum or other mass market vitamins. They suck.

Other nutrients that I personally think might be helpful (though I cannot point to any research) are coenzyme Q10, natural-not synthetic-vitamin E (natural mixed tocopherols WITH gamma tocopherol ONLY), lecithin, trimethylglycine (definitely try this) and iodine. Just take everything. These nutrients are all very beneficial and there may be synergies in combinations of these nutrients. Thats what I did, and I think it helped a great deal.
