La dura lotta dell'Artigiano. Con l'idea ma senza i soldi on 2009-11-23
-

Seth's Blog: Really Bad Powerpoint on 2009-11-18

Communication is the transfer of emotion.
-
Our brains have two sides. The right side is emotional, musical and moody. The left side is focused on dexterity, facts and hard data. When you show up to give a presentation, people want to use both parts of their brain. So they use the right side to judge the way you talk, the way you dress and your body language.

Personally, I choose to believe in 'The Last Starfighter'. I am practicing, Centauri, I'm practicing...

As a Christian, I frequently mentally (and sometimes physically) [facepalm] when talking with other religious people.
-Young earth creationists
-Militant anti-evolutionists
-God gave us the earth so anything we do to it must be His will
-That person doesn't believe the same things as me so they must be going to hell
-That person sins, so I'm justified in hating/judging/ostracizing them
-etc. etc. etc. These aren't the markings of a religious person or mainstream religion in general and it is dishonest to attribute these kinds of things to everyone who is religious . These are merely are the markings of those who have failed to have an open mind and apply reason and logic to their faith. These kinds of people are more concerned about being right than what's right. And what's more condemning to them is that they are more concerned about being right than they are in following the core tenants of their faith to show charity and compassion towards their fellow men.

How the Dunning-Kruger effect will stop techies buying houses • The Register on 2009-11-18

If it really is true that only the incompetent have the self-confidence to put themselves forward to try and rule us all, then it makes anarchy remarkably attractive.

The Dunning-Kruger effect is an example of cognitive bias in which "people reach erroneous conclusions and make unfortunate choices but their incompetence robs them of the metacognitive ability to realize it".

Slashdot Hardware Story | CERN Physicist Warns About Uranium Shortage on 2009-11-18

Hey. I've got a brilliant Idea. Let's construct a thermonuclear fusion reactor at the center of the solar system. We will collect the radiation energy with photovoltaic cells pointed to the sky. As there are no moving parts, it wouldn't require much maintainence either. Why hasn't anybody implemented such a brilliant idea?

Slashdot Mobile Story | Less Than Free on 2009-11-18
-
When I asked a mobile industry veteran why carriers were so willing to dance with Google, a company they once feared, he suggested that Google was the 'lesser of two evils.' With Blackberry and iPhone grabbing more and more subs, the carriers were losing control of the customer UI... With Android, carriers could re-claim their customer 'deck.' Additionally, because Google has created an open source version of Android, carriers believe they have an 'out' if they part ways with Google in the future. I then asked my friend, 'So why would they ever use the Google (non open source) license version?' ... Here was the big punch line — because Google will give you ad splits on search if you use that version! That's right; Google will pay you to use their mobile OS. I like to call this the 'less than free' business model. This is a remarkable card to play. Because of its dominance in search, Google has ad rates that blow away the competition. To compete at an equally 'less than free' price point, Symbian or Windows Mobile would need to subsidize.

Comments on “Judge Dredd 'Black Box' recorder/spy kit for guns unveiled” • The Register on 2009-11-17

As a NRA UK member, I have to say that your logic is incredibly silly. As a society, we require registration for lots of things that we do not want unsuitable people to own, or we might wish to tax - cars, motorbikes, guns, airplanes, boats, TVs (in the UK), etc. None of these consitutes a "lease" - it may be a tax, it may be a prohibition, but it is not a lease because you are not paying off the cost of purchase.
So, yes, registration IS prohibition - to certain people. We specifically register guns because we do not want mentally unstable, murderous people to be able to own them. If a guy does 20 years for a double murder, he should not be allowed to get out and buy an AK-47, two shotguns, and a Remington 700 Tactical sniper rifle...or is even that too restrictive for you? I'm all for guns - provided that the bearer can be proven to be competent, show training, show he stays current with that training, and doesn't abuse the weapon to commit crimes. THAT requires registration.
People that can't show that they are trained to handle guns shouldn't own them (we require it for cars, planes, and other dangerous items), and I am beginning to believe that people that can't understand THAT might not be suitable candidates to own them either...
