    • Despite the growing attention paid to the use of customer loyalty programs
      versus coupons, recent research shows that it is not necessarily an either-or
      proposition.  Indeed, those studies found that coupons alone are more
      effective in increasing purchase likelihood than loyalty programs alone.²   Coupons also have an effect over a broader
      customer base, whereas loyalty programs only alter behavior for a small
      segment.³   While there is genuine debate
      as to the effectiveness of loyalty programs in increasing customer retention, it
      is clear that the potential benefits of loyalty programs are only fully realized
      when combined with other promotional efforts, particularly coupons.4
