Clothing from East Greenland - RMV on 2009-09-16
-
Beads were also formerly made into women's jewellery, such as earrings, and into
men's chest amulets. -
In Greenland the use of beads reached its temporary peak in the large and
very colourful collar, (shoulder covering, yoke) worn as part of the kalaallisuut, the 'Sunday suit', which
today constitutes the national women's costume in Greenland. - 1 more annotations...

The majority of Greenland’s birds are migratory birds, and there are therefore
only around 60 species that are regarded as permanent breeders in the country. A
total of 235 species of bird have been observed in Greenland, -
Among the most striking species is the white-tailed eagle – or nattoralik, as it
is called in Greenlandic. The white-tailed eagle is Greenland’s largest breeding

Greenland Minerals on 2009-09-16
-
Ikaite is a mineral that is formed in the cold marine waters of a
fjord. It is sometimes referred to as a pseudo-calcite or aragonite, but
can crystallize in waters too cold to support either. It will actually
destabilize and decompose into calcite if the water temperature climbs above 8
degrees Celsius! It is found in the Ika Fjord, from which it is named. -
This is one of the ten minerals unique only to Greenland's Ilímaussaq
intrusion (See above for details) and is also completely
unique to this complex. Semenovite has only been found on one spot on the
Ilímaussaq intrusion (Taseq), and had to be re-discovered in 1988 after the
exact locality had been forgotten. It was originally discovered in 1968

Ice & Water Resources in Greenland on 2009-09-16
-
The Greenland ice cap has an estimated volume of 1.7 million km3
and a large number of outlet glaciets extend from the ice cap to the Davis
Strait. The most well-known of these is the Ilulissat Glacier. It is one of the
fastest and most active glaciers in the world, creating dramatic and
breath-taking scenery of ice and sea. It produces 10 % of all Greenland's ice
fields, corresponding to around 35 billion tons of ice a year. -
The ice cap was formed two million years ago in lush, mountainous woodland.
Since then, there have been warm periods in which some of the ice has melted but
it never disappeered altogether. Thus, the ice fields of Greenland's glaciers
are products of the ice cap, formed form fresh water which has fallen as
snow over the past 100.000 years.
