    "Galling" means annoying, so Olaudah is talking about how heavy the chains were getting and how difficult it was to move around in the cramped conditions.

    There were not "bathrooms" on board these ships, so all human waste had to be placed into these tubs.

    The cruelty of the slave catchers on board these ships were extreme. Slaves were also punished severely for breaking any rules.

    For many slaves, the experience on board these ships were horrifying. Facing this, many slave decided that suicide was the only way out of this experience. Many slaves who were chained together jumped overboard dragging everybody down to the bottom of the ocean.

    For a slave, any violation of the rules was met with extreme violence...including trying to escape by death.
