Private: Online Masters in Museum Studies at Johns Hopkins

I had a recent conversation with Phyllis Hecht (phecht@jhu.edu) who is the Associate Program Chair for the Museum Studies online Masters degree at Johns Hopkins University. The purpose of the conversation was to discuss some of the thinking and logistics behind their newly formed online program and to compare their thoughts with those of the Art Education faculty interested in creating an online Masters in Art Educations. Here is what I found.

The proposed course enrollment limit is set to be 15 students. They will go above that limit as needed but their plan is for 15. They plan on offering about two or three courses per semester and also plan on offering courses in the summer as this program is designed for working professionals and the summer is a time where many working professionals plan to take courses.

The faculty used to develop and teach the program courses are adjunct faculty who are located all over the world. They have made this choice in part to keep costs to a minimum in both the creation of the program and also the delivery of the courses.

From a financial side, they do not expect to recover their expenses for about two to three years. They don’t currently have a graduate or undergraduate resident program in Museum Studies but they do have a minor.
