  • Academic writer's block. | Ask Metafilter on 2008-05-03

    • What you have to do instead is bury the fantasy the ideal dissertation, and simply start working—briskly, regularly—on one that will pass and that you can write now. The truth is that the vast majority of doctoral dissertations—even in the humanities, where, as you say, the prevailing rhetoric is about ideas and originality—are not compelling, compulsively readable stretches of deathless prose, but rather exercises produced by student writers for a particular, limited purpose: getting the thing past their examiners.
    • Another tip for when you can't quite figure out how you want to say something is to write about 5-6 different versions of a sentence, without stopping to consider what the best words would be, just writing it as if you were talking about the idea to someone. You can do the same thing with paragraphs, shuffling the sentence order around without stopping to think about it much until you've generated 5-6 versions, then you can go back and compare, without having to worry about composing at the same time.

    • Even though I do not believe the US Weekly should have published this deleterious diet plan so that every insecure fourteen year old girl in the country can jump start her eating disorder, I am grateful that there is an honesty to it. Famous women, when asked about their diet and exercise plans, usually attribute their thinness to a "fast metablolism," "running around after my kids," "doing yoga," or "just eating healthy." These answers are total lies in almost all cases. In your own life, look around at all of the women you know - how many have Jessica Alba or Gwyneth Paltrow bodies? Very few or none, I would guess. All of my friends and I do actually do just work out and eat healthy and while we all have nice figures (before some jerk starts saying I must be fat, I'll state we range in size from 2-6), none of us have that stick thin, super sculpted look of Hollywood actresses. The reason those women are able to maintain those sizes is because they follow nutritionally unsound starvation diets like the one above and work out two hours a day(and often have the assistance of cigarettes and cocaine). It is such a disservice to normal women and so disingenuous when these women won't admit the unhealthy lengths they go to to maintain their unnatural bodies.

    • i recovered from an eating disorder, and this is about what i ate when i starved myself.. and i danced 5 days a week and worked out every day. YOU WILL be tired.. your body will not only burn the fat but burn your necessary muscle, which burns more calories than fat does, therefore decreasing your metabolism. if your going to be active, you need more calories, end of story. if you want to look dead and emaciated, then follow this plan. if not, then eat a balanced diet with a good workout routine. I'm sorry, but i find muscle definition a lot sexier than seeing rib bone definition.
