Aan de Universiteit Utrecht (UU) geeft Marinka Copier onderwijs in Second Life (SL). Voor de cursus "De regels van het spel" onderzoeken studenten hoe virtuele werelden in relatie staan met de 'echte' wereld. Vorig jaar gaf de docente als onderdeel van de master 'Nieuwe Media' deze cursus in de online game World of Warcraft (WoW).

Voor de cursus doen studenten in SL onderzoek voor hun essay en praten er met medebewoners. De wereld van SL is erg divers. Daarom werd als introductie een vossenjacht georganiseerd. "Studenten moesten andere personen zoeken in SL. Zo ontdekten ze de wereld en kwamen ze op interessante plaatsen terecht," vertelt Copier. Verder lezen de studenten veel artikelen en boeken en houden ze bij wat er in de media verschijnt over Second Life.

Second Life and a few other online virtual worlds have been identified in "The Horizon Report: 2007 Edition" as "emerging technologies likely to have a large impact on teaching, learning, or creative expression within higher education." Released in January 2007 by the New Media Consortium (NMC) and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), this report forecasts the wide use of virtual worlds in higher education by 2010.

SimTeach, an online resource about multi-user virtual environments maintained by Jeremy Kemp, an instructional designer at San José State University (Calif.), lists more than 100 highered institutions with active projects in SL. About 2,600 educators working in SL have also registered to use the Second Life Educators Forum available on this independent website.

schrijfvaardigheidsonderwijs in de cursus Accurate English . Daarbij
gebruiken de studenten het binnen de opleiding gehanteerde RITE-codeersysteem:
Rapid Intensive Text Evaluation. De opleiding hanteert een doordachte combinatie
van contactonderwijs en studentactiviteiten in WebCT.

De combinatie van college en elo is belangrijk voor het slagen van deze methode

The course was designed as a fully online course for several reasons: to
overcome time-space constraints, to exploit the opportunities for writing and
reading offered by the Web and by the conferencing software FirstClass, and,
most importantly, to overcome the language teacher's lack of field-specific
knowledge by using asynchronous peer review. Although the aim of the course was
to improve students' ability to write a research article (RA) in correct,
accurate English, the main advantage of the course for students was learning how
to use the conferencing software for collaboration and reflective peer review.
