    • One of the many great things about working on del.icio.us is hearing from people who really grok what we do and why we’re doing it. This enthusiasm takes many forms, and we’ve definitely been blown away by interest in our preview as well as the overwhelming response for our old swag.

It’s all great, and it’s extra-great when someone creates something that’s extra-special. For all of you who struggle to explain Social Bookmarking to your family and friends, there’s now an awesome video for you

    • Can I move my blog from here to another blog somewhere else?

Of course! Your data is your data, and don’t trust any service that treats you otherwise. You can now import and export your entire blog and comments as an XML file that WordPress.com will generate for you. You’ll find the export and import options now under “Manage” in your blog admin area. The XML format is an extended version of RSS 2.0

Please do NOT use this to get lots of backups for yourself. It uses a lot of resources to create the above file but also because everything on your blog is backed up hourly and also daily. So having this as a backup is really of little use.

Please only use it if you want to export your blog to move away from wordpress.com. (not that you’d want to do that - unless it’s to your own hosting of your WordPress powered blog!) ;)

If moving to your own hosting of your WordPress powered blog, you will need to import it to the latest version of wordpress (2.1)

    • LASSA (http://www.slais.ubc.ca/PEOPLE/students/student-groups/lassa/index.htm) [SLAIS’s student association] is really excited to have arranged a screening of The Hollywood Librarian. This full length documentary, written and directed by American librarian Ann Seidl, was shown with great success at the last ALA conference. It examines the image of librarians through popular film as compared to the real work of real librarians. Our screening will be part of a North America-wide release to libraries and library organizations, during the American Banned Books Week.

      Here are the details:

      - Librarians, and LIS students, get in for free! Yes, that’s right. Free! If you would like to bring along non-librarian partner/friend/spouse/family members, their tickets can be purchased for $8 for people 12 and up, $5 for children and seniors (no charge for kiddies under 6).

      - Whether you have tickets to purchase or are just getting freebies, you need to reserve them. Please email lassa.ubc at gmail.com with “Hollywood Librarian” in the subject line and let us know how many tickets you need. Even though it is free, we have a limited number of tickets, so please only request tickets if you actually intend on coming.

      - The showing will be Thursday, October 4th at 7:30 pm in the GSS ballroom (map: http://www.maps.ubc.ca/PROD/index_detail.php?show=y,n,n,n,n,y&bldg2Search=n&locat1=408)

      - We would like to invite you to stay and mingle with other students and librarians after the film–LASSA will be providing tea, coffee and sweets.

      - Do you work for a local library or library system? We would really appreciate you spreading the word! Remember to tell your colleagues that librarians (and library employees) get in free, and that they can reserve tickets by emailing lassa.ubc at gmail.com.

      - To learn more about the film, visit http://hollywoodlibrarian.com

      - Questions? Feel free to email LASSA.

Following the lead of Jessamyn West (http://librarian.net/), a

technology consultant for libraries in Vermont, we have installed Ubuntu

Linux on an older, Intel-based personal computer that was donated by one

of our patrons. The Ubuntu computer is located in the Children's/YA area

of the Main Floor at Cheshire Public Library. Please stop by and try it

out. If all you know of Linux/Unix is grep, awk, sed, and a bunch of

other obscure acronyms, you will be pleasantly surprised at the mature

graphical user interface. The Ubuntu distribution comes complete with

the OpenOffice.org suite of office productivity applications, as well as

a number of audio and video utilities. OpenOffice.org Writer, Calc, and

Impress are capable of reading MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access

files respectively, and saving as MS files, PDF, HTML, RTF, or Open

Document format. Draw and Math applications round out the OpenOffice.org

        suite.

Ubuntu is distributed on Live CDs, which are bootable CDs that will not

affect your Windows installation at all. You can run Ubuntu from the

LiveCD to confirm that your computer hardware is compatible with the

current distribution. You can also install Ubuntu from the LiveCD. When

installing Ubuntu, you can choose to install it in a new partition on

your Intel computer, which allows you to boot either Ubuntu or your

existing Windows installation, or you can choose to reformat the entire

disk drive and use it all for Ubuntu. To see just how easy it is, watch

Jessamyn West's video of the entire process from start to finish at:

        http://youtube.com/watch?v=nWIrxuF5NSo.

If you would like a LiveCD for Ubuntu to try on your own hardware, you

can make your own by downloading the CD image from the the Ubuntu

project website at http://www.ubuntu.com/, or you can email me and I

will be happy to send you one.
