There was a reason for this swing towards conservatism. America believed that its men had suffered during the years of the war, and needed to be pampered. And, how? Women had to be model housewives. They had to look pretty, keep a manicured home going, raise children and be meekly submissive.

The so-called seductive elements of the film were true to that time and were emblematic of the confusion women must have felt in the face of conformity.

Otherwise, to show a group of young women in the 1950s so quickly ascribing to a modern sense of empowerment would be historically inaccurate. Critics of such movies have to watch them in the context of the gradual progression of the women's movement.
