Social Media in Advertising and PR on 2009-07-09
-
Social media is best understood as emerging online media that share most or all of the following characteristics: participation, openness, conversation, community, and connectedness. With these new media, the consumers are often also the producers who engaged in viral customized production and consumption. We have moved from one-to-many communication to many-to-many one. Social media can be powerful when people create content and share it as well as their opinions or experiences online. The most common forms of social media are: social networks (e.g., Facebook, LinkedIn), blogs, podcasts, wikis, content communities (flickr, YouTube, del.icio.us, etc.) and microblogging (Twitter, Yammer).

Still Don't Get Twitter? Maybe This Will Help on 2009-07-08

to expose the discussion to others, you have that option. You can always take things private via direct messaging if you wish.
Immediacy. When you just can’t wait for information, Twitter can’t be beat for getting your question to a large group. It’s impractical to do this with e-mail. People’s inboxes are already cluttered with spam and you have no way of getting your message to people you don’t know. Also, through “retweeting,” a message can reach a large number of people who aren’t on your follower list. This brings new perspectives to the conversation and gives you the opportunity to discover people you wouldn’t have otherwise met.
