I think that one point worth discussing in reference to Gen X, that is so often neglected, is the path of their boomer parents. I think if you consider the traits of what you describe in your piece tv and consumerism were not the predominate influences.Their parents lives were. The magic of the 60's led to the utilmate let down of the late 70's and early 80's.This I think produced kids who were aware of so much and entitled to upper middle class prosperity, but also saw from their parents that they were clearly not fulfilled and that the potential of a greater transformation of all of their lives was stolen. Their best days were behind them and the crushing irony was that they would eventually became just like their parents, many far worse.

I think this greatly planted the seeds of narcissism and the need to feel anything that I think is one major theme in the movie.

I think if you expand Fincher's themes it is timeless. The loss of youth and the advent of joining the rat can deaden us all. The ego wants us to feel alive and violence is the oldest cure in the book for that one.
