    • Number of coils

Each additional coil adds friction to the knot, which makes the noose harder to pull closed or open. The number of coils should therefore be adjusted depending on the intended use, the type and thickness of rope, and environmental conditions such as wet or greasy rope. Six to eight loops are normal when using natural ropes. One coil makes it equivalent to the simple slip knot.

The miraculous cure of an <!--3ref=u44=x53300.htm-->Augustinian<!--k03--> nun at Antwerp in 1657 from a grievous illness, through the wearing of a cord in honour of <!--3ref=u44=x76802.htm-->St. Joseph<!--k03--> gave rise to the pious practice of wearing it to obtain the <!--3ref=u44=x82978.htm-->grace<!--k04--> of purity through his <!--3ref=u76=08070a.htm-->intercession<!--k02-->. The <!--3ref=u44=x82027.htm-->devotion<!--k08--> soon spread over many countries of Europe, and in the last century was revived at Rome in the <!--3ref=u44=x81429.htm-->church<!--k04--> of <!--3ref=u44=xxyyyk.htm-->San Rocco<!--k03--> and in that of <!--3ref=u44=xxyyyk.htm-->San Nicolo<!--k03--> at Verona. Pius IX, in a rescript dated 19 September, 1859, approved a special formula for the <!--3ref=u76=xxyyyk.htm-->blessing<!--k02--> of the Cord of <!--3ref=u44=x76802.htm-->St. Joseph<!--k04-->, and in his Brief "Expositum nobis nuper" (14 March, 1862) enriched the <!--3ref=u44=x81604.htm-->confraternity<!--k07--> with many indulgences. In 1860 several new Indulgences were granted to the <!--3ref=u44=x81604.htm-->confraternity<!--k07--> erected in the <!--3ref=u44=x81429.htm-->church<!--k04--> of <!--3ref=u44=xxyyyk.htm-->San Nicolo<!--k04--> at Verona and by the Brief "Universi <!--2ref=u25=05112a.htm-->Dominici<!--k01--> gregis", 23 September, 1862, the <!--3ref=u65=04223a.htm-->Confraternity<!--k02--> of the Cord of <!--3ref=u44=x76802.htm-->St. Joseph<!--k04--> was raised to an <!--3ref=u65=01692a.htm-->archconfraternity<!--k02-->. The members are obliged to wear a cord having seven knots, and are exhorted to recite daily seven <!--3ref=u44=xxyyyk.htm-->Glorias<!--k03--> in honour of <!--3ref=u44=x76802.htm-->St. Joseph<!--k04-->. <!--k23-->Confraternities of the Cord of <!--3ref=u44=x76802.htm-->St. Joseph<!--k04--> much be aggregated to the <!--3ref=u65=01692a.htm-->archconfraternity<!--k04--> in the <!--3ref=u44=x81429.htm-->church<!--k04--> of <!--3ref=u44=xxyyyk.htm-->San Rocco<!--k04--> at Rome in order to enjoy its <!--3ref=u44=x85931.htm-->spiritual<!--k08--> favours and Indulgences.

    • When the friar-inquisitors arrived at a town, they convened a solemn meeting of bishop, clergy, and people and announced that secret heretics were to be reported to them. There would be a “time of grace”, usually a month, and heretics who voluntarily came forward, and confessed and abjured, during that period received only the lighter penances, prayers, fasts, pilgrimages, fines, intended to confirm their faith
    • After the period of grace, persons accused of heresy who had not abjured were brought to trial. The inquisitors published the edict of the faith which ordered all Christians, under penalty of excommunication, to denounce the heretics and those who protected them
