  • German Hybrids Arrive, With Big Engines and Big Price Tags on 2009-11-20
    • With the ML 450 Hybrid and the BMW ActiveHybrid X6, German carmakers have arrived to the hybrid party with keg-sized jugs of expensive stuff. Unfortunately, the most exciting green car party has already moved on to plug-in hybrids and electric cars with much greater potential to reduce fuel use and emissions.

The European Commission, European Parliament and European Council talks in Brussels yesterday have ruled that public buildings will lead the way in improving the energy efficiency of buildings in the region.

The decision makers reached an agreement that will see new or refurbished public buildings having to reach new standards in energy efficiency from the end of 2018.

Most newly constructed buildings will also have to meet the same improved efficiency standards, but only be the end of 2020.

Member States will be responsible for setting their own energy efficiency standards, as the talks concluded that it would be impractical to set levels applicable to all the climate conditions across the region.

The proposals will now go to the European Parliament for endorsement at the beginning of next year.

  • A new segmentation for electric vehicles on 2009-11-19
    • Global carmakers are trying to define a future market for electric vehicles. To reach beyond affluent, environmentally conscious, or technically enamored buyers, these companies will need to develop products that satisfy the consumers’ main concern—good value for money. Given the current cost of energy storage, that is a considerable challenge.

A recent McKinsey study suggests that one way companies can achieve this goal would be to focus on tailoring battery-powered vehicles to the actual driving missions of specific consumers—that is, to the way they use their vehicles.
