«Чтобы семейный бизнес выжил, каждому поколению нужен лидер. Остальным необходимо соблюдать порядок. То, что мы построили глобальную компанию еще до начала глобализации, доказывает, что [наша семья] умеет брать на себя риски и одновременно быть ответственной», — говорит Ротшильд.

EBSCOhost: Educational cost-benefit analysis on 2009-08-08

A practical way of assessing the desirability of projects, where it is important to take a long view (in the sense of looking at repercussions in the further, as well as in the nearer, future) and a wide view (in the sense of allowing for side-effects of many kinds of many persons, industries, regions, etc.), i.e. it implies the enumeration and evaluation of all the relevant costs and benefits (Press & Turvey, 1965).

but they are less frequently used to evaluate education than the third technique, rate-of-return analysis.... The virtue of using the rate of return as a means of measuring the yield of educational investment is that the choice of an alternative rate of return is not built into the calculation as it is in the case of benefit cost

Trompenaars (1993) is more concerned with the concept of culturally relative meaning at the individual level of analysis, subsequently defining seven dimensions of culture which correspond well with national differences. Trompenaars (1993: 140) proposed a much needed framework for national based analysis. He goes half way between a typological and dimensional approach, arguing that reality is much more complicated, and that categories may be construed using a variety of dimensions, thereby attempting to distance himself from both Hofstede (whom he mentions scantily) and Douglas (who is not mentioned at all).

The model proposes that behaviour, perception, attitudes, beliefs and values are shaped, regulated and controlled by constraints that can be grouped into two domains -- group commitment and grid control.

How would one make use of this set of normative-behavioural-attitudinal attributes in an organizational setting? First, we should put the model to test on two criteria: How would it stand up to an overall organizational mapping (meta-analysis) and what does it add to our understanding of key organizational processes (such as organizational restructuring and change)? Second, we should make use of an anthropological-related methodology -- such as participant observation and the collection of critical incidents -- which would be in line with an anthropological approach.

EBSCOhost: Zen and the Art of Higher Education Maintenance: Bridging classic and roman... on 2009-08-05

In the classic Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, Robert Pirsig clarifies the meaning of quality in higher education. He identifies two ways of viewing quality--classic and romantic. He argues that the fullest meaning of quality contains both. Using Pirsig's insight as a point of departure, this article explores the nature of both romantic and classic quality in higher education. The ideas of Alfred Whitehead are used to clarify the nature of romantic quality in university, life. Finally, the contemporary Quality literature is examined using insights from Pirsig, Dewey and Whitehead.

During the 'where we are' phase university departments and divisions need to use processes that enhance and encourage creativity (i.e. retreats, meetings facilitated by outsiders). Concrete evidence about 'where we are' is also essential if departments are to figure out how to improve (get better/enhance Quality). The development of benchmarks is one way for a department to tell where it is.

What will agencies do when everyone can bypass advertising? - Marketing Magazine on 2009-03-16
-
We have recently seen the emergence of 'social media' agencies, although I am not sure they even believe in their own descriptions. Last year we saw the much-hyped launch of The Population, with the support of Photon, as one of Australia's first social media agencies. Already this year Julian Cole, the social media strategist for The Population has decided he 'hates the words social media' and that really it just explains where the web is at currently. Clearly we are all still coming to grips with how to even explain the new ways of advertising clients products, let alone doing it.

The marketing of Barack Obama to become the first black US President was some of the most sophisticated in history, and very different to previous political campaigns. The lessons were that stories matter, that permission matters and that motivating the most committed is more effective than broadcasting to the uncommitted. Note the word 'motivate' rather than 'sell'. A motivated consumer can evangelise and have a multiplying effect on your marketing.
