I always loved astronomy... since i remember my name... It was a long way to get here.... i wish i had chance to learn more and study more astronomy... but unfortunately i can't believe i just haven't enough time to go out for sky observing in last years....!!! i am currently an astronomy PhD stu...
I use Diigo because it is GREAT to have a tracking of my thoughts on web pages... my questions and ideas... I always liked to use some thing like this and i searched it and i found it!

Prisms will generally disperse light over a much larger frequency bandwidththan diffraction gratings, making them useful for broad-spectrum spectroscopy. Furthermore, prisms do not suffer from complications arising from overlapping spectral orders, which all gratingshave .Prisms are sometimes used for the internal reflection at the surfaces ratherthan for dispersion. If light inside the prism hits one of the surfaces at a sufficiently steep angle, total internal reflection occurs and all of the light is reflected. This makes a prism a useful substitute for a mirror in some situations. -
Grisms (
grating prisms )
Diffraction gratings may be replicated ontoprisms to formgrating prisms , called "grisms". A transmission grism is a useful component in an astronomical telescope, allowing observation of stellar spectra. A reflectiongrating replicated onto a prism allows light to diffract inside the prism medium, which increases the dispersion by the ratio of refractive index of that medium to that of air.

A ray first passes through a right-angle prism, then a Dove prism, and then an Almici roof prism (a right-angle prism cannot be used at the bottom, because that would mean that the ray will be reflected 3 times and thus the final image will be left-handed). Now the top prism can be rotated while the bottom one remains fixed. How should the Dove prism behave? Since it rotates an image at twice the rate of the rotation of the incoming image, the Dove prism should rotate at half the angular speed of the right-angle prism. This is achieved using differential gears Keep in mind that normally a periscope would include several lenses to increase the field of view and add a magnification factor.

this is a really nice info but i didn;t understand why we can't use a right angle prism!? becuase in Almici roof prism we have only one reflection and thats same as right angle prism!!!! can any body help me?!
