I cannot speak for Catholics; as I am not a Catholic. However, I can state that not all Protestants believe this. Many among Evangelicals do believe and teach currently a physical resurrection in a renewed human body such as Jesus had..flesh and bone. But it is a transformed human body without the limitations that currently limit us. No where does the New Testament teach an eternal "spirit' or "energy" existence for human. St Paul speaks of those deceased Christians longing to put on their renewed bodies at the resurrection.
Some Christians may teach this..the mainline denominations and among the "New Evangelicals" but it is error and a fallacy and is not Scriptural.

And I Enoch was blessing the Lord of majesty and the King of the ages, and lo! the Watchers called me—Enoch the scribe—and said to me: ‘Enoch, thou scribe of righteousness, go, declare to the Watchers of the heaven who have left the high heaven, the holy eternal place, and have defiled themselves with women, and have done as the children of earth do, and have taken unto themselves wives:
“[Then] the sons of men [began teaching] the mixture of animals of one species with the other, in order therewith to provoke the Lord” (Jasher 4:18).
What fault could Pharisees have with a gospel that preaches human brotherhood and putting others before yourself? Doing unto others as you would have them do unto you?
It denies their special claim, as God's "chosen people" which in practice means self-made Gods.
