Kids and Cookies is an online flash game that teaches elementary students about fractions in a game setting. Students choose characters to be their “friends” and then choose how many cookies they have. They have to evenly share the cookies with their friends and can use different cutters to divide the cookies. The site provides a great introduction to rational number fractions. This is a great site for introducing your students to the concepts of fractions, especially those at the “sharing” and “fair” age because of the way that they have to share and split up the cookies fairly. This would be a good whole class activity with an interactive whiteboard or a projector where students take turns sharing their cookies. The purpose of “Fractions in Action” is to combine the Core Knowledge content on fractions with hands on learning activities. This is an introductory unit on fractions and how they can be modified. The fraction activities in this unit are designed to work together with textbook work. Since students learn in different ways it is necessary to use different strategies when teaching math. A variety of hands on activities have been included, such as Cuisenaire rods, fraction bars, recipes and games.

This is an introductory unit on fraction concepts and number
sense with a variety of activities which include problem-solving projects. It is designed to meet the different learning styles of students. Students will be engaged in identifying numerators and denominators, renaming, reducing to lowest terms, comparing, and adding and subtracting fractions. This unit could easily be incorporated with textbook work as well.
