Could this be the One Media Player to Rule Them All? I haven't messed around with Miro at all yet, but I've still got another eight or so hours before work and nothing to put off but sleeping...
I feel like I'm seeing TrialPay EVERYWHERE lately! Anyhow, I highly recommend AdAware. The free version should suit most users.

"You're at the coffee shop working on your computer, and you feel the need to get up and get a cup of joe... Your table is just out of sight of the counter, and you don't want to pick up your PC and take it with you...what to do?"
Honestly, I've been looking for something like this for ever. I hate leaving my laptop unattended, but I hate looking like an idiot bringing it up to the counter. And what if you've got to take a bio-break? You know what everyone in the room thinks when you bring your laptop into the bathroom with you...

This Lifehacker article is a great introduction to Linux app Wine 1.0. This app lets you run Windows software on a PC that's running a free open source Linux operating system. In other words, this is one less reason to pay for expensive and wasteful commercial software.
I try to keep my laptop as light weight as I can by using portable, or USB-friendly, applications as much as possible. I've seen Firefox 3 Portable in action and I'm pretty impressed. I'm going to hold out a little longer before I start using it, just because I rely so much on my Firefox plugins. I want to give developers some time to update their plugins, which aren't guaranteed to work with FF3.
To be honest, I'll be dragged kicking and screaming into Windows Vista, but I realize that there are people out there who use (and enjoy) Vista. If you are one of those, this freeware tool from Microsoft might boost your productivity (or it might just boost your frustration instead.)
I'm used speech recognition software on my tablet PC's for years. If you're lucky enough to work in a quiet environment, it's awesome. This article by Adam Pash is great. He walks you through the software, complete with screencasts. Now, shouting at your Vista PC can actually be productive!
