Since the foundation of the company, all Shoei helmets have been designed and manufactured in Japan, although they are distributed and sold all around the world. They are particularly popular in the USA.

Shoei's GRV helmet was the first helmet to use carbon fiber and Kevlar. Shoei also created the first coverless shield system and the Dual Liner Ventilation system.

The flagship X-Spirit was introduced in 2003 and was promoted by Shoei as the most advanced helmet in the world, winning MCN's Product of the Year 2003 award in the clothing category. It was followed by further development and the introduction of the popular RF-1000 (sold as the XR-1000 in Europe) in 2004, and the later introduction of the X-Eleven.

Many of the Shoei helmets meet the Snell Memorial Foundation M2005 rating.

Pros: Good grip both on and off-road, only slightly heavier then 100/90 tyres, no noticeable decrease in top end or mileage, value for money.

Cons: Higher than stock tyres which raises seat height, decreases life of rear suspension and chain set, ride quality becomes a bit stiff, no official presence of FKR in India i.e. no warranties, not available in smaller cities/towns.

Increasingly, motorcyclists are choosing protective equipment constructed of man-made textiles rather than leather due to their improved weather protection, from heat, cold and water, and the increased utility these garments tend to provide in terms of pockets and vents. Common materials include high density (600 - 1000 Denier) ballistic nylon (e.g., Cordura) and Kevlar (or blends of Kevlar, Cordura, and Lycra) and often include waterproof liners made from materials such as Goretex. These artificial fabrics are said by some motorcyclists to be more comfortable, particularly in warm weather. The textile garments typically take less time to dry out, whereas leather gear may remain wet (and cold) for some time.
