When reading think about what the subject is and the meaning to your reading. Condense your reading, and get to the heart of the subject. Also asking for some help from other good students or your professors can help too.

Look through the headings on the chapters (skimming through) before you read the whole chapter.
Do not force yourself to read for more than 50 min straight without taking a five minute break in between.
Read before you go to class rather than after. That way you know what questions to ask.
If there are study groups taught by people who took the class before you, GO TO THEM. They usually give hints on what will be on the exams.
Make friends with people ahead of you, they can tell you where they went wrong and you can know what to expect.
Drink plenty of water, and get plenty of sleep.
Do as many practice questions as you can, and don't just look to know the correct answer, try to figure out why the other answers are wrong.

How do you prevent nodding off while reading a long-winded and dense textbook? - Yahoo! Answers

To comprehend sentences, several more skills are necessary. The reader must not only decode the words, but also comprehend the syntax, retain the sequence of words, use contextual cues, and have adequate vocabulary knowledge.
Each sentence is read, understood, associated and integrated with the previous one and so on. Eventually the entire paragraph is read and the reader continues on.
By the end of the chapter both details and main idea need to be retained in working memory. Otherwise, the reader may have retained isolated facts but may not know the sequence of events nor understand the main idea. -
Long term, do memory tests, reading is a complex skill that requires the simultaneous activation of many different brain processes.

When reading for a long time do you ever get a headache or think about something that happened during the day? - Yahoo! Answers
-
Try using a highlight marker and writing notes or drawing sketches on the margins that summarize what you're reading.
Try making connections as you read to relate to the text, like things in your own life that are related to the text, and write a word on the margin about that.
After each chapter think of something that you wonder about what you just read. Something that wasn't answered by the text, and take note of that.
Try sitting on a rocking chair, so that you're moving while you read.
Take frequent breaks. Set yourself a goal, like reading through one chapter, or two pages, or whatever, and then getting a snack.

Remember, the reader is in the play of words. These depends on what the reader understands in what the author wanted to convey.
A good reader will in turn makes a good writer. The understanding of the reader is well appreciated if it is translated into words for the others to learn.
Thus I would say that: Reading is also a form and method of studying. -
i spend 5 hours of my day on the web just to find out answers to my question and read books untill i fall into sleep
the more i read and study the more i understand that i know
too little
i enjoy my life this way also i love going to caves and search
they are wxciting
every knowledge is exciting to me and am unable to choose only one or two subject to think of.
though i am 52 ,i feel like a curious teen and the same young
but the study itself is not my aim,it is just a road to the truth
i do not believe that any body be really stupid and the best example in great Einstein who was nicknamed as "The grandfather of stupidity" in school ,but he proved that he was not
so what is the use of a degree when it becomes a goal?will it not stop you observing the real goal?
a curious mind is a border less world.

The only thing that really helps me is to totally isolate myself from distractions....I turn the TV off and sit in a silent room. I try to focus on each paragraph I read. I read the paragraph and then let my mind wander for a minute, then get back to it. It takes awhile to get it read, but I eventuall do.

Learning is best done by reading a paragraph or page or similar convenient amount, and immediately reciting the gist of it, and it has been found better to recite aloud than to recall in the head.

The first is to be confident in your understanding of English grammar. The second is to take memorization exercises whenever you can. The third is to make sure you understand each paragraph and try to further simplify them. The fourth is to think of likely questions that the pages could cover and see if you can understand how they answer those questions. The fifth is basic repetition of petinent data, such as dates, names, time and location, etc. The 6th is to take notes whenever a concept is complicated. You can read supplemental information to advance your understanding of parts the pages from the other book that are too vague.

Try to get lost in what your doing, whether its reading, or anything else. If your reading and you have extra mental energy, try using it for the words on the page Imagine the scenario of the book unfolding in your mind. If its an informational document try thinking about the text in your own way, basically form an opinion of what your reading while its flowing. If your working on a project, constantly think of different ways that you can do it or make it better. Just try to train yourself in a way where your not stunting your extra energy just redirecting back into what ever it is your doing.
