    • The site of unforgettable canyoning is the authentic Valaisian village of Blatten at the Aletsch Glacier. The entrance to the gorges is situated at the foot of the 120-foot Gebidem Dam, which was build by the Electra Massa Corporation in the 1960s in order to utilized the natural energy generated by the water. Equipped with a Neoprene suit, helmet and climbing belt one climbs over rocks which were left behind by the Aletsch Glacier in the last Ice Age about 11,000 years ago. Highlights: the 8-meter jump into a beautiful waterbasin and the 30-meter descent on a rope into the "Cathedral" .

        Grimsel gneiss and Glacial Ice

         Bernese Oberland

The Grimsel area is a landscape of ancient stone and primeval forces. This pass has always been used to cross from North to South or vice-versa. It also constitutes the watershed between the North Sea and the Mediterranean and offers some spectacular hikes, ranging from easy strolls to challenging climbs on the vertical granite walls.

An excursion to the Oberaar Glacier is a wonderful day excursion. Leave the Husegg station on the Grimsel Pass Road, pass the Triebtenseeli to the Oberaar Lake and Glacier. The glacier has shaved the steeper hills into the humpbacked landscape visible today. The Oberaar Lake often contains ice floes which is not further surprising given that the water comes directly from the nearby glacier. It presents a picture perfect vision of a glacier: brilliantly white.

    • Trift Bridge is one of the most spectacular pedestrian suspension bridges of the Alps. It is 100 meters high and 170 meters long, and is poised above the region of the Trift Glacier. Even reaching the bridge through the ravine by cable car is an adventure.

    • 2. Lofoten Islands

Few visitors forget their first sighting of the Lofoten Islands, laid out in summer greens and yellows, their razor-sharp peaks poking dark against a clear, cobalt sky. In the pure, exhilarating air, there’s a constant tang of salt and, in the villages, more than a whiff of cod, that giant of the seas whose annual migration brings wealth. A hiker’s dream and nowadays linked by bridges, the islands are simple to hop between, whether by bus, car or – ideally – bicycle.

      • 1) The Vièl del Pan path in the Dolomites

This trail has incredible views of the Marmolada, one of the most famous mountains of the Dolomites. The mountains are big, but that doesn’t actually mean all the hikes are difficult or long. One of the best things about hiking in the Dolomites is that the ski infrastructure operates during the summer, so even non-hikers can take the lifts up and enjoy gorgeous views, then take the lifts down again. As an added bonus, the mountain restaurants, called Baita or Refugi, serve lunch all summer (and many have beds, if you want to stay over).

        Details

        • Start in the town of Canazei, at the Belvedere lift.
        •
        • Park at the base of the lift. The hike starts from the top of the lift, which is open 8.45 – 12.30 and then 2 pm – 6 pm.
        •
        • The hike is about 3 hours one way, with 430m (1,400 feet) of downhill and 120m (about 400 feet) of uphill. The highest point is 2450m (8,000 feet). The path is very well signposted, and is one of the Dolomites’ most famous because of its incredible views of the Marmolada mountain.
        •
        • Places to eat lunch along the way include Rifugio Belvedere, Rifugio Sass Bece, Rifugio Fredarola, Rifugio Vièl del Pan, Rifugio Castiglioni. These places are all open from about June 20th through about September 25th, and as long as the lift is running, there’s no need to make a reservation.
        •
        • The transfer back to Canazei is easy by bus. The hike ends at Lake Fedaia, and if you don’t want to retrace your steps for 3 hours, buses run quite frequently during the summer. However note that the frequency diminishes after the lifts stop running, so even if sunset is not until 9 pm, don’t plan on hiking much past about 4.30 or 5 pm (my husband and I learned this the hard way, and ended up calling a taxi.
