This demonstration highlights many of the capabilities that ICEfaces and Direct-to-DOM rendering provide. The Auction Monitor is an example of a multi-user, interactive experience not easily acheived using standard web application techniques. To begin with, there is no page refreshing; instead you experience smooth incremental updating of the page as you interact with it. Next you get page updates in real time. Clocks tick down, and bids appear automatically, but the user is never forced out of their current area of focus as these updates occur. As you interact with this JSF application, here are some of the things that you can do. You will find your Direct-to-DOM version to be enriched in a number of ways.

JSON, as stated on its website, is a lightweight data interchange format. Surprisingly, despite JSON popularity these days, there is not much material to be found on the subject of XML vs. JSON comparison (usability, overhead, performance). Hopefully this will change soon with JSON broadening adoption as a standard.
At this point, it can be safely stated that JSON offers undisputably lower overhead, understood as ratio between business data and their envelope. This is true for both small and large messages. E.g., an XML representation of a simple structure with data in asXML looks like this: -
