"Quincy Troupe, "A Poem for Magic"\n\ntake it to the hoop, "magic" johnson,\ntake the ball dazzling down the open lane\nherk & jerk & raise your six-feet, nine-inch frame\ninto the air sweating screams of your neon name\n"magic" johnson, nicknamed "windex" way back\nin high school\ncause you wiped glass backboards\nso clean, where you first juked and shook\nwiled your way to glory\na new-style fusion of shake-&-bake\nenergy, using everything possible, you created your own\nspace to fly through--any moment now\nwe expect your wings to spread feathers for that spooky takeoff\nof yours--then, shake & glide & ride up in space\ntill you hammer home a clothes-lining deuce off glass\nnow, come back down with a reverse hoodoo gem\noff the spin & stick in sweet, popping nets clean\nfrom twenty feet, right side\n\nput the ball on the floor again, "magic"\nslide the dribble behind your back, ease it deftly\nbetween your bony stork legs, head bobbing everwhichaway\nup & down, you see everything on the court\noff the high yoyo patter\nstop & go dribble\nyou thread a needle-rope pass sweet home\nto kareem cutting through the lane\nhis skyhook pops the cords\nnow, lead the fast break, hit worthy on the fly\nnow, blindside a pinpoint behind-the-back pass for two more\noff the fake, looking the other way, you raise off-balance\ninto electric space\nsweating chants of your name\nturn, 180 degrees off the move, your legs scissoring space\nlike a swimmer's yoyoing motion in deep water\nstretching out now toward free flight\nyou double-pump through human trees\nhang in place\nslip the ball into your left hand\nthen deal it like a las vegas card dealer off squared glass\ninto nets, living up to your singular nickname\nso "bad" you cartwheel the crowd toward frenzy\nwearing now your electric smile, neon as your name\n\nin victory, we suddenly sense your glorious uplift\nyour urgent need to be champion\n& so we cheer with you, rejoice with you\nfor this quicksilver, quicksilver,\n\nquicksilver moment of fame\nso put the ball on the floo
