This list provides websites to governmental offices that either help regulate current policies or organizations that research, initiate and lobby for privacy. This list also provides passed or current proposed legislation regarding privacy and how it relates to the public and the internet. A common reoccurring theme in most of the different proposed legislation are the similarity in their goals - protecting citizens privacy and penalties for criminals who steal private information.
This is a great site for learning more about policy issues and electronic privacy. The site is organized very well and you can see here topics are ordered in alphabetical order. There are also hot topics or topics of especially great interests of the moment. This is the first site I visited regarding this subject and it will probably be a jumping off point for other bookmarks.
Florida Virtual School (FLVS) is an online public school for the State of Florida. FLVS also provides tuition based enrollment for students residing outside of Florida. FLVS has a privacy policy in place and it can be viewed on the FLVS website. I have included this page because this is also my employer and I think students' right to privacy is important. It ties into the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. (COPPA)
This organization is a change agent in regards to public policy and how it applies to online privacy. The Electronic Frontier Foundation began in 1990, way before the internet was what it is today. This group of experts ranging from lawyers to technologists are defending issues of free speech, privacy, innovation and consumer rights. Electronic Frontier Foundation is a donor funded non-profit organization and depends on the public support. I consider EFF to as one of the top foundations out there is regards to online privacy. This organization only champions for rights but also defends those rights in a court of law when necessary.
The Federal Trade Commission's website discusses privacy and the FTC Act, which guards against unfairness and deception. It enforces companies' privacy policies about how the company collects, uses and secures consumers' personal information. The Commission also protects consumer privacy under the Fair Credit Reporting Act and the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act.
This page located on the Federal Trade Commission's website is a great reference page for Frequently Asked Questions about the Children's Online Privacy Protection Rule. This is a good site if you have questions regarding the COPPA and children's right to online privacy.
OnGuardOnline.gov is a website maintained by the Federal Trade Commission. It cover topics on everything from Social Networking to Online Investing. It is a resource with tips and tools to help be safe and protected online. It even has a searchable database of software tools that can help protect your computer from spam and spyware. Wow! Games and videos are on this website too!
This is FSU's Privacy Policy. I wanted to include this site since it is my university's website. FSU does not collect any personal information when a person visits its website. The only way they will collect information is if a person chooses to make the information available to FSU. Any information collected is used for purposes in which the person it is collected from authorizes the university. The university collects generic information such as the date, time and website pages that are visited on the website. However, this is not personally identifiable information.
US Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs Privacy and Civil Liberties site is full of information regarding resources and legislation pertaining to civil liberties protection. Initially the site was created to assist DOJ and other government entity employees. However, it was determined that these resources could easily be used by other entities from law enforcement to public safety to the public itself.

The Center for Democracy and Technology is a non-profit organization with public interests in keeping the Internet open, innovative, and free to all. The CDT has a background in law, technology, and policy and seeks practical solutions to contribute to freedom of expression and privacy in communication technology areas.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent United States government agency. The FCC was established by the Communications Act of 1934 and is charged with regulating interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite and cable. The FCC's jurisdiction covers the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. possessions. Recently, the FCC outlined procedures for making the internet neutral and transparent. The 4th Amendment to the US Constitution is at the core of privacy for the America;s citizens. It gives people protection against unreasonable search and seizures allowing them to be secure in their person, houses, papers and effects.
