Tutorial- Method of Difference
A second test to determine whether a given factor plays a causal role requires us to take away that factor, holding everything else constant, and to see whether the effect still occurs. Mill called this the method of difference.
Example:
If you car makes a funny noise when you accelerate, take your foot off the pedal and see whether the noise goes away. Scientists use the same technique when they do controlled experiments. In testing the efficacy of a new medicine, for example, they would use two carefully matched groups. One group would get the drug, and the other would get a placebo. The only difference between the groups would be the presence or absence of the drug, so that any difference in results could then be attributed to that factor.
The Method of Difference applies when cases in which the phenomenon occurs and cases in which it does not share all circumstances except for one. This method has us infer that the circumstance in which the two cases differ is causally connected to the phenomenon under investigation.
1. The Method of Difference has one noteworthy advantage over the Method of Agreement: It makes use of both negative and positive instances. It takes into account cases in which the phenomenon of interest fails to occur, as well as cases in which it occurs.
2. As with the Method of Agreement, however, the causal relationships may be more complicated than the method can handle.
3. Thus, this method really only allows us to show that if a condition occurs both where our phenomenon does and where it does not, then that condition cannot be sufficient for our phenomenon. -

The Structure of Scientific Revolutions - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
a new scientific truth does not triumph by convincing its opponents and making them see the light, but rather because its opponents eventually die, and a new generation grows up that is familiar with it.

The majority of the scientific community will oppose any conceptual change, and, Kuhn emphasizes, so they should. In order to fulfill its potential, a scientific community needs to contain both individuals who are bold and individuals who are conservative.

BBC NEWS | Floating wind turbine launched
The world's first floating wind turbine is to be towed out to sea this weekend.
Statoil's Alexandra Beck Gjorv told the BBC the technology, the Hywind, to be put off Norway's coast - "should help move offshore wind farms out of sight".
And it could lead to offshore wind farms eventually being located many miles offshore, away from areas where they cause disruption, Ms Gjorv added.
This would benefit military radar operations, the shipping industry, fisheries, bird life and tourism. -
