While we've witnessed many effective approaches to incorporating iPads successfully in the classroom, we're struck by the common mistakes many schools are making with iPads, mistakes that are in some cases crippling the success of these initiatives. We're sharing these common challenges with you, so your school doesn't have to make them.
I just recently have been given an iPad mini to learn to use. The intent is to learn what it can do, how I use it in the classroom and when our state's annual ed. tech. conference comes around in March I will be able to assist other teachers in its use and integration in the classroom.

The momentum for promoting the four Cs (collaboration, critical thinking, creativity and innovation, and communication outside the school walls) in such out-of-school venues as libraries and museums continues to grow. As the landscape for learning continues to be re-charted to match learners’ needs, evolving research, and the potential of on-site and on-line experiences and connections, libraries and museums are ripe for an increased leadership role.
When used appropriately, educational technology is a tool to assist with implementation of the Common Core Standards, help raise graduation rates, and prepare students for life beyond K-12 education. Technology employed in isolation, without direct instruction, or highly qualified guidance, fails to address these concerns.
It is the intent of this AASL white paper to provide a review of technology-related topics that can contribute to success and might serve to generate interest in further research on filtering practices, Acceptable Use Policies (AUPs), apps, social media, Bring Your Own Device (BYOD), and related subjects.
This post discusses communication.
Our students need to effectively express themselves. They need to learn how to write complete complex sentences. They need to create original thought and learn how to share it in everything from full blown white papers through 140 character tweets. They need to learn how to get effective feedback in various formats. They need to learn how to take complex ideas and communicate them to multiple audiences, including considerations for global meaning and cultural differences. They need to learn to communicate using varies media and develop strategies for how to send out effective targeted communication.

Schools partner with public libraries to create literacy communities. "More and more, people are coming to the library as a destination and spending time there as a family," she said. "It's promoting the library as a community learning space and play space.
The ultimate goal is to send the message that 'the library is for you and coming to the library should be part of your family routine.' "

Blog by Paige Jaeger - with information on the Common Core State Standards
How is reading complex text like lifting weights? Just as it's impossible to build muscle without weight or resistance, it's impossible to build robust reading skills without reading challenging text. The common core state standards in language arts treat text difficulty as akin to weight or resistance in an exercise program. This is in contrast to most past discussion of this topic, which emphasized how overly complex text may impede learning. Such discussion therefore focused on developing various readability schemes and text gradients to help teachers determine which books might be too hard for their students. The new standards instead propose that teachers move students purposefully through increasingly complex text to build skill and stamina.
