Welcome to the laboratory for Advanced Research in Intelligent Educational Systems (ARIES). The lab was founded in 1987 with the goal of deepening both research and practice in intelligent systems and how they apply to teaching and learning. Faculty, staff, and students within the laboratory contribute to numerous academic areas, such as user modeling, artificial intelligence, adaptive hypermedia, e-learning, and information visualization. The laboratory is headed by Dr. Gordon McCalla, and is funded in part by the the TeleLearning Network Centres of Excellence (1995-1999), and the LORNET NSERC Research Network (2003-Present). ARIES is one of the many laboratories within the Department of Computer Science at the University of Saskatchewan. -

Metatomix — JAC
Judicial Arraignment Calendar (JAC) provides complete and accurate information to law enforcement booking agents regarding the criminal and civil history of sexual offenders / predators at the time of booking. Further, JAC automatically pushes this information to a Dashboard that acts as a judge’s Arraignment Calendaring System, ensuring judges receive crucial and timely notification of a suspect’s sexual offender/predator status and history, warrants, probation status, and other state statutes regarding known felons.

Calais for WordPress
Meet Tagaroo, the Calais plugin for WordPress blogs. As you are writing your post, Tagaroo automatically analyzes it and suggests both tags and images from Flickr to enhance your post. You can select tags you like, incorporate them into your post, and then automatically search Flickr for images to complement your writing. Tagaroo has its own home, where you can read about it in more detail, download the plugin, and visit the forums.
Calais for Drupal
Drupal is clearly among the hottest content management systems out there. The folks at Phase2Technology have built a great Drupal module that makes Calais functionality available to the Drupal CMS platform. Riding the Semantic Wave with Yahoo
If you're tuned in to the Semantic Web buzz, Yahoo's recent announcement that they will crawl websites and index semantic metadata is a big deal. Over time this will allow much more powerful and focused search capabilities — and we want you to be part of it.
But there's a problem. Most bloggers don't have the tools or the time to create rich semantic metadata to identify the people, organizations, places and other items in their content. So we've built a simple tool that will do it for you. -

Looking back from this point in time, I cannot help to ask myself: while information and communication technologies (ICT) have achieved incredible advances in the last decade or so and have been successfully applied in numerous fields to improve the quality of our everyday life, why do we still find old fashioned services dominant in public health care? Have we, as computer scientists or IT professionals, done enough in the so-called semantic web (SW) era to make patients suffer less and to make medical doctors’ lives easier? -
Semantic Web Technologies – has their time come in education? : Notes from the Future
As JISC has recently announced an open call of funding for a study on Semantic Web technologies in teaching and learning we thought we’d use this opportunity to provide a bit of an update on Semantic Web developments.
The JISC call seeks to fund a study which looks at pragmatic aspects of the actual use of semantic applications in real world scenarios. The successful applicant will review a number of case studies of real-world teaching and learning scenarios and look at the potential for use of semantic technologies. The key question they are asking is: “Can you convince us that semantic technologies offer one potential solution to some real problems?”-

Can the Semantic Web help education? | TalkBack on ZDNet
a few researchers but no solid examples
I know a few people (especially some professors in the
teaching-oriented universities) who are working on
this technology. But as far as I know, they are
individual experiments and no significant examples so
far that are really exciting.
