Job Description of a Corporate Background Investigator
Corporate background investigators may conduct internal investigations of a workplace. They are responsible for pre-employment background checks, the investigation of employees, harassment claims, employee misconduct and investigating illegal or improper activities.
They may also run external investigations. They provide surveillance of employees who work outside of their workplace or previous employees who have claims, such as a workers compensation claim. They may do this by interviewing people to gather information, even posing as someone else to obtain incite.
Corporation investigations are also preformed, such as corporate breaches, corporate risks, liability and unfair trade practices. Corporate background investigators may also be employed or contracted to perform accounting investigations of a company to locate funds or embezzlement practices. Researching competitors and vendor investigations are also performed.
Requirements to Become a Corporate Background Investigator
Corporate investigators are typically required to possess a bachelor's degree. Though no specific type of degree is required, a degree program in a field related to business is preferred. Many corporate investigators also hold a master's degree, either in law or business.
Employers prefer prior experience in the investigative field. Prospective investigators may obtain experience by completing college courses in criminal justice at a community college or vocational school.
