My favourite of the free downloadable mindmaps. It's a combination mindmap and presentation software created at Tufts University. You can create nodes with different shapes, sizes, colours, fonts, link and drag anywhere you like. You can add urls, files, images, and notes. The notes icon is very tiny. Choosing export nodes and notes gives you a .pdf listing each node with its notes beside it. The outline mode put some of my nodes under the wrong heading. You can view the entire map or create a sequential slideshow of the nodes by drawing a pathway. You can also save and export notes for these pathways.
This site claims to list all of the commercial and free mindmapping software available. Has feature comparisons of the free mindmapping apps. Mindmapping software, concept mapping software, information organisation software
Better than average. Mindomo is a mindmapping software. It requires a free account and flash plug-in. It's easy to use, and url's for websites links, online videos and online pictures can be inserted. Notes can be inserted, but to insert attachments you need the premium edition. Maps can be printed or exported as images, rtf, or pdf.
Very basic but easy; a good choice for younger kids. Would also look good on a SMARTboard providing there aren't so many bubbles that the font is too small. You can zoom in to make bubble (and fonts) larger. Saving online and exporting require that you create a free account. You can change colours but not fonts, and you can't add notes or graphics. Can drag Bubbles where you like and there's a very cool effect when you delete them. You can export as jpeg, png, xml, html. The jpegs are actually very nice and in colour and I recommend printing the jpeg rather than printing straight from the website.
Very Basic. This is a free online mindmapping tool. You have to create a free account but you don't have to download any plug-ins. It's easy to figure out and maps can be printed or shared online or exported as .pdf or into FreeMind. You have a variety of shapes and text sizes, no graphics except some icons. However, you can add notes to a node.
Average. Easy download and installation. Easy to use, interface just okay. Can embed images but they are not automatically scaled. Can embed links. The best feature is the ability to move connecting links anywhere and make curved lines.
Better than average. Mind42 is a free online mindmap collaboration tool. Requires a free account, but no plug-ins to install. Great intuitive and attractive interface with ability to collaborate, insert notes, url links, and online images. Can export in Freemind, Mindmanager, mind42, pdf, rtf, png.
Average Mindmapping Tool. The online capability and very attractive interface is the main difference between this app and others; can also be used offline using Google Gears. Free basic account, no plug-ins. This mindmapping tool has a nice appearance and an easy to use interface. You can insert notes and icons but no other links, photos, etc. You can import existing Freemind maps and export as pdf or image files. The premium edition can export to Freemind.
Free online version of Inspiration in beta. Interface looks just like Kidspiration/Inspiration; also collaborative. Was able to use rapid fire, change bubbles to pics, add notes, links, switch to outline mode and print. Limited pic gallery and no templates otherwise has the basic features that most kids use.
This is a gallery of mindmaps created with a particular software. Great examples of the diversity of ways information can be represented.
