Unit 1: People of the Americas
The First Americans
3-4 week unit on the Mayans, Aztecs, and Incas. Includes appendices of handouts/worksheets. Many fun, hands-on activities and projects.
"Explore the first team sport in human history and learn the meaning of winner takes all." This is an educational website that gives the history of the game, the rules, and its religious and cultural importance.
Students choose one ancient American culture to explore in-depth, and use online resources to find important facts about the civilization. Students synthesize their research and work together on a poster presenting what they have learned to the class. **Students could also create a digital poster using Glogster.**
A 7-day unit covering the first Americans, Ancient American Civilizations, and Native American tribes.
A wonderful website about Native American Regions. Students can explore the site independently. They play a game about what they just read to advance to the next section of the site.
A webquest on Native American tribes. Students research tribes and create flap books to present to the class.
Unit 2: Different Worlds Meet
Exploration, The Founding of European Colonies
A WebQuest in which students learn about some of the most well-known explorers (i.e. Columbus, Giovanni, Cartier, Champlain, Hudson, Cabot, Drake). The concluding project is a writing activity.
This is a 2-3 week unit on explorers. Students explore different points of view, research explorers, and investigate what life would be like as an explorer. Includes appendices of activities/worksheets.
Another unit plan on explorers (8 50-minute lessons). This one focuses on a few well-known explorers (i.e. Columbus, Prince Henry, Bartolomeu Dias, Vasco de Gama, Magellan). Includes appendices of activities/worksheets.
This is similar to "Oregon Trail." You must try to establish a colony, taking into consideration the settlement location, management of resources, and relationships with Native Americans. Students LOVE this!

Unit 3: The American Colonies
New England Colonies, Middle Colonies, & Southern Colonies
Extensive unit on the 13 Colonies (you might want to pick-and-choose from the 21 lessons included). There are some great lessons in here that will have students actively engaged.
Unit 4: The American Revolution
Background to the Revolution, The Road to Independence, The War for Independence
An excellent unit on the American Revolution. Lessons included require students to think critically and analyze different points of view. Use of primary sources and hands-on activities is key to this unit.
"Rags to Riches" is a Quia Revolutionary War trivia game, much like "Who Wants to be a Millionaire."
Unit 5: The Nation's Early Years
The Constitution, The Early Republic
