This policy brief reviews multiple studies and makes some conclusions.
This is the capstone report for the Local Systemic Change through Teacher Enhancement Initiative.
This document provides information on STEM education publications that may be of interest to DR-K12 grantees for the purposes of (1) disseminating knowledge and products and (2) developing partnerships with stakeholders and end users. These publications were chosen because they provide researchers and developers with an opportunity to present their work to individuals that could use, promote, or improve the work. We gave preference to organizations and publications that target practitioners and policymakers, though we also included some focused on the research and academic communities. Information for this index was collected primarily from organization websites. Manuscript submission guidelines and notes were provided as available on the websites. We made our best attempt to identify whether submissions were peer-reviewed, though some publications were not explicitly clear on this matter.
Coming from different sectors and representing a diversity of perspectives, the members of the Commission came to agreement that the United States cannot make the necessary improvements to mathematics and science education by focusing exclusively on mathematics and science learning. Rather, the United States will need to give at least equal weight to driving fundamental change to the nation’s schools and to strengthening the innovation capacity of the educational system. The Commission has combed the field for ideas and practices that are already operating effectively on the ground and has given careful consideration to other recent recommendations and calls for action. The Commission’s work indicates that strong and promising examples exist, as does a growing national consensus that change is needed.
This research synthesis examines how teacher effectiveness if currently measured, evaluates the research and different instruments, and includes policy implications.
CCSSO was awarded a two-year grant by the National Science Foundation to conduct a meta-analysis study of teacher professional development programs in mathematics and science. The project synthesized findings from professional development programs that have effects on student learning and improved teaching as demonstrated by scientifically-designed research and evaluation. In particular, the study addressed two questions important to education leaders:
1. What are the effects of content-focused professional development for on improving teacher knowledge and skills and on improving student achievement?
2. What professional development program characteristics explain the degree of effectiveness, and are the findings consistent with existing research on effective professional development, e.g., content focus, duration, coherence, active learning, and collective participation of teachers)?
