There are so many things that we don't think about when we look at children from different social classes. I had never thought of my upbringing as middle-class, but I did bring middle-class values to my education and that made all the difference in the world. This book showed me why some children have so many problems adapting to the expectations schools have of them and how, as a teacher, I can adapt to reach these children. Children may have to learn the social norms of school before they can even begin to learn how to read and write. This book gives educators a start to learning how to integrate these children into the school system without expecting them to turn their backs on their home cultures. "
"It is also important to realize that even though we as instructors invest a great deal of time and energy into providing every avenue possible to create opportunities for children in poverty to learn, it is ultimately their decision to climb out of the dysfunctional culture of poverty. However, the true discrimination lies with not providing these young people the opportunity to make that significant choice that effects every aspect of their future."
