A letter from Sir Hans Sloane
From Hans Sloane in London to Lady Mordaunt at WaltonThe doctor advises Lady Mordaunt that Sir John cannot safely take a purge at the moment. He thinks Sir John took rhubarb too soon after his fever. His remedy for stomach ache is pearls, crabs' eyes or crabs' claws powder, half a dram at a time two or three times a day with asses' milk in the morning and a good large draught of Bath water (warmed) in the afternoon and before going to bed.He then turns to Lady Mordaunt's health and thinks the pain in her back comes from her kidneys; for this he prescribes a little syrup of marshmallows.
