The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) holds many of its courses as free online and open to anyone. Look for writing coursework on here, under the humanistic and writing category, or literature.
The Open University in the UK offers free courses via its OpenLearn and LearnSpace online offerings. This is the Start Writing Fiction free online course. Check for others via OpenLearn also.

Excellent online workshops, by the publishers of Writer's Digest. WOW courses are available in several genres, and you have access to experienced tutors to help through the course.
Absolute Write has two newsletters to sign up to - and you will receive free listings of agents or job markets on signup. The site also sells ebooks, and software for writers, provides a writers directory, a large library of articles on writing, and a healthy writers forum called the Water Cooler. There are also classes / courses sold onsite which vary in content and duration.
