BLOSSOMS stands for Blended Learning Science or Math Studies. It is a project sponsored by MIT LINC (Learning International Networks Consortium) a consortium of educators from around the world who are interested in using distance and e-Learning technologies to help their respective countries increase access to quality education for a larger percentage of the population. http://linc.mit.edu/
The vision of BLOSSOMS is to begin to develop a large, free repository of video modules created by gifted volunteer teachers from around the world, seeded initially by MIT faculty members and by partnering educators in Jordan and Pakistan. Each module will be designed pedagogically to run in harmony with the regular in-class teacher, the subject matter covering a specific area of mathematics or of a physical science. Each module will build on prerequisite material studied, but will present a math or science concept in a mind-expanding and exciting form. The goal is to develop deeper and richer skills in the students and to enhance their critical-thinking skills. Simultaneously, we want to excite them in pursuing a science, math or engineering career. The end goal of the BLOSSOMS project is to attract a larger fraction of students - young men and women - to math and sciences, leading to excellent careers in the increasingly dominating 'knowledge economy' of the world.
Via an appropriate technology for each high school using them, these blended learning modules will bring into the classroom a world-class expert in pedagogy and in the area of math or science knowledge being studied by the students. The first 50 BLOSSOMS modules will be created by “star” teachers in Jordan, Pakistan, and at MIT and eventually by educators from around the world. Once the repository is established with high standards of content and pedagogy during the pilot phase, then “the World’’ will create additional BLOSSOMS video modules, with MIT providing quality assurance.
This BLOSSOMS Learning Video Repository is just beginning to grow and flower! It is hoped that by September 2009, there will be at least 45 learning videos listed here -- covering topics in mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry and created by educators in Jordan, Pakistan and the United States. These BLOSSOMS learning videos are licensed under the Creative Commons 3.0 license.
A Note to Teachers: The final segment of each BLOSSOMS video module is a one-on-one conversation between the “video guest lecturer” and a teacher who may choose to use the video in his/her classroom. In this Teacher Guide segment, the module creator discusses the learning objectives of the lesson and shares ideas on ways to conduct in-class activities between video segments that will engage students in the module topic.
