Evidence of a student taking her learning beyond the classroom and engaging experts in the field. This educational technologist used Kirsten's comment on his blog as the basis of a subsequent post and this began a relationship between a student and and a professional.
Madline shows how she is blending disciplines, making connections between math and her own field of art.
Following our class discussion about copyright and creative commons licensing, Brad found this video remix of Disney films that (quite ironically and quite accurately) presents the problem of copyright.
Researches an idea introduced in class and gets classmates to engage him on some of the key issues.
Illustrates the power of the informal and socially connected nature of blogging. As this student complains in detail about the structure of the course, he gets sympathy from a fellow student, plus this gives valuable feedback to the instructors about needed clarifications on expectations and some course corrections midstream. Plus, it illustrates the "rant" genre of blog post wonderfully
A report on a live event organized by the student
Bri picked up off a comment by a student in class who had been in Kenya and described this use of mobile phone credits as currency. She fully documents her research on the topic.
Illustrates the student's application of a technology tool for problem solving (in another class).
Parker features a tool that he's learned and applied in an other class, then relates how he has tried it out himself.
In addition to adding layers of historical depth to the final project he's involved in producing (about Mormon proselyting in the Internet age), this blog post also shows the interactivity among the students. Ariel (working on a somewhat related project) adds her insights to Kurt's own observations. The students are connecting with history, and with each other.
Whether or not Jeffrey receives the virtual internship he applied for (moderating a blog for the US State Dept in Africa), he has opened up this concept for me and other readers. We need to rethink our models of both education, the workplace, and the institutions by which we bridge the two. This shows Jeffrey applying in his immediate and vocational life the principles learned in this course.
James personalized and remixed the course learning outcomes. It certainly is clear to this teacher that this student both understood and applied those concepts, especially as evident in the links to his blog posts where he documents his learning.
Based solely upon a topic prompt (no readings or references), Maggie explored the concept of being connected and fleshed out a range of pertinent concepts, all relevant to the course and beyond what the professors had originally conceptualized. Great example of the students teaching the teachers, taking the lead in learning
Brian had earlier posted on wanting to try some crowdsourcing. In this post, he lays out a specific proposal. Brian ended up leading the "Backpack 2.0" group that fulfilled his vision of organizing digital tools for learners.
Sean used the insights he'd gained about Web 2.0 to convince the staff of the literary magazine at his college to do more than put up a static website. It's about building community...
Sean is applying his learning in practical ways, teaching others.
Using Google Presentations, Kevin explained the use of backchannel, illustrating this with screenshots of his own participation in a backchannel discussion hosted by CNN during a speech by Pres. Obama. We can literally see Kevin's civic participation with this new tool
Example of a student who followed up on the topic of an invention we discussed, found a book about it, then excerpted a brief portion of the book that made the concepts clear. Self-directed learning.
Madeline demonstrates integrating her learning and interests from outside of the civilization class. She applied her talents from her illustration major to literally illustrate concepts from the history of civilization in many of her posts.
You can trace Dave Potter's learning here. He goes from an undergraduate psychology student's summary of Marshall McLuhan's ideas to a more formal essay review which he then excerpts and blends with his own thoughts
Working on the final project led Shuan to recounting her personal story about the struggles with faith within her family.
