Little-known open spaces enhance downtown S.F.
-
"This is part of the public infrastructure downtown," said Blaine Merker, a founder of Rebar, a design collaborative in San Francisco that has tested the openness of several of the spaces with "nap-ins" and kite flying. "It needs an informational aspect it doesn't have, and more of a social aspect. ... All these spaces are governed really subjectively."
-
Building security wasn't as much of an issue in 1985, when the urban design plan for downtown San Francisco made open space a must - even if it was privately owned.

Looking up at the display in fascination and bewilderment, an elderly
lady stumbles over a pothole in the pavement. Helped back to her feet
by a younger man, she decides to complain to the council about the
pothole. The man suggests he can do that right now, from his iPod Touch
and using the library’s open public wifi, by registering the presence
of a pothole at this point on the local problems database, Fix My
Street. The old woman stares at him quizzically as it takes him fifty
seconds to close the website he had been looking it on his mobile
(Google Maps directions for “hairdressers near SW4”, a phrase he’ll
shortly have to type in again, having neglected to bookmark it) and
access fixmystreet.com. He spends the next few minutes indicating the
presence of a pothole outside the library on Fix My Street (unaware of
the postcode, he has to select one from a few possible matches on
street name), before he moves on, satisfied with his civic good deed
for the day. The elderly lady had long since shuffled off, muttering to
herself. Although Fix My Street smartly forwards on all issues to the corresponding council, a beleaguered under-trained temp in the also underfunded 'pavements team' is unaware of fixmystreet.com and unable to cope with the levels of complaint, and so the
pothole claims five more victims over the next two weeks until someone
rings up about it.

The View from Taiwan: Chatting with Somebody: Professor Thomas Liou

open space﹞。

Online at www.cnu.org, the Congress for New
Urbanism promotes functional, mixed-use neighborhoods, where everything is a
five-minute walk or a short drive away. That's not the way a lot of folks live today. They commute to work, sometimes
an hour or more, using multi-lane expressways on which a pedestrian looks
suspicious.

Modern Rebel: MLK Jr. Memorial LibraryWashington DC
-
Though we've never enjoyed our library experiences at MLK, we have always admired the way the transparent building looks, especially when it is illuminated at night. Whether you love or hate the architecture of the building, it is worth a visit if only to view the extraordinary local history collection on the third floor.
-
Most importantly, a library would probably never be built like this today for book preservation and energy concerns. The greenhouse effect created by the plate glass walls meant that the climate for the books fluctuates more widely throughout the day and seasons. The light damages books over the long term.
