(Thomas

I’m not sure if the construction is for new housing or a complete rework of the park. Possibly a local reader can provide some insight.
PS: Some Google research has turned up the answer. At the GreeterGreenville website under the haynie-sirrine master plan section I found a document which includes a recommendation to create an important public space to honor the memory of Miss Ellie Mae Logan.

What, then, is the timeline for condemnation and demolition
of the Plaza Theatre? Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy said
the county expects to acquire the property in 2007, but that
certain procedures must be followed. "We are very anxious
to proceed with condemnation and to remove this eyesore from
the Patchogue community," Levy said. "We're now at
a point where an RFP [request for proposal] for a consultant
to present an economic development plan is about to be issued."
Such a plan is a requirement of condemnation, the county executive
explained. "The economic development plan has to show how
condemnation will dovetail with the overall plans for the area
... and we hope to have this property vested in Suffolk County
by the end of 2007," Levy said.

Looking up at the display in fascination and bewilderment, an elderly
lady stumbles over a pothole in the pavement. Helped back to her feet
by a younger man, she decides to complain to the council about the
pothole. The man suggests he can do that right now, from his iPod Touch
and using the library’s open public wifi, by registering the presence
of a pothole at this point on the local problems database, Fix My
Street. The old woman stares at him quizzically as it takes him fifty
seconds to close the website he had been looking it on his mobile
(Google Maps directions for “hairdressers near SW4”, a phrase he’ll
shortly have to type in again, having neglected to bookmark it) and
access fixmystreet.com. He spends the next few minutes indicating the
presence of a pothole outside the library on Fix My Street (unaware of
the postcode, he has to select one from a few possible matches on
street name), before he moves on, satisfied with his civic good deed
for the day. The elderly lady had long since shuffled off, muttering to
herself. Although Fix My Street smartly forwards on all issues to the corresponding council, a beleaguered under-trained temp in the also underfunded 'pavements team' is unaware of fixmystreet.com and unable to cope with the levels of complaint, and so the
pothole claims five more victims over the next two weeks until someone
rings up about it.

Social networking is not one of the main goals of BrooWaha and I took particular care when designing the website to keep it from becoming another vain attempt at reproducing what MySpace is today. If people want to use BrooWaha to meet bloggers, journalists, writers, etc, in addition to interacting with the site as a newspaper, more power to them. However, I don't think it will ever be primarily a social networking site. People will go to BrooWaha to read news articles and learn about Los Angeles and the world. BrooWaha is also a great tool for people to practice their writing and get feedback
on it from other authors and readers. Finally it is a great platform to share ideas, discuss news, and possibly also make friends, enemies, and rethink journalism for the better.

computational information design | ben fry

The ability to collect, store, and manage data is increasing quickly,
but our ability to understand it remains constant. In an attempt to
gain better understanding of data, fields such as information
visualization, data mining and graphic design are employed, each
solving an isolated part of the specific problem, but failing in a
broader sense: there are too many unsolved problems in the
visualization of complex data. As a solution, this dissertation
proposes that the individual fields be brought together as part of a
singular process titled Computational Information Design.

Peak Water: Aquifers and Rivers Are Running Dry. How Three Regions Are Coping
-
This is not to say the world is running out of water. The same amount exists on Earth today as millions of years ago — roughly 360 quintillion gallons. It evaporates, coalesces in clouds, falls as rain, seeps into the earth, and emerges in springs to feed rivers and lakes, an endless hydrologic cycle ordained by immutable laws of chemistry. But 97 percent of it is in the oceans, where it's useless unless the salt can be removed — a process that consumes enormous quantities of energy. Water fit for drinking, irrigation, husbandry, and other human uses can't always be found where people need it, and it's heavy and expensive to transport. Like oil, water is not equitably distributed or respectful of political boundaries; about 50 percent of the world's freshwater lies in a half-dozen lucky countries.

We no more need tame contemporary art in our squares than statues of Margaret Thatcher. What we do need is for art to be truly public, for it to have the largeness of vision to engage imaginations and the intelligence to speak of matters that concern us all.

public 的定義與反射|Public art at its best helps us to see the rest of the space differently.

One of the problems is that public art is such an amorphous category. There is certainly no single solution to the question of what makes a successful piece. But a commission is more likely to succeed if its purpose and function are questioned at the start.
Is the work to be a sculpture or an installation? Is it for an existing community with an existing identity, or a new community whose identity can be influenced by the commission? Is it to be permanent or temporary? If temporary, what follows? Is the commission primarily a sop to a developers' conscience, a blatant attempt to gloss over a basically mediocre development? How is the community to be involved? How is the artist involved? What is the process for choosing a short list of artists for the commission - if this is the route chosen? And finally, who chooses the actual commission?

Fish Pennsylvania » Conservation, not Preservation

Paleontology confirms that Mother Nature is a responsible steward of her forests. She provides balance for component species with her invention called “restoration;” the removal of older tree growth stands and successions of plant growth. Mother Nature manages her forest’s health with such devices as fire, wind, flooding, disease and insects. These devices, as primitive as they may be, ensure a productive forest ecosystem over the long-term.
-
Preservation is a manmade prescription designed to age woodlands. Ironically, preservation is a remedy that smothers plants and shrubs by maturing the forest canopy. The forest vegetation is replaced by a succession of invasive plant life, ingredients not found in Mother Nature’s recipe book for a healthy wilderness.
