Chris Guillebeau speaks to Googlers in Mountain View on December 8, 2010 about his book The Art of Non-Conformity: Set Your Own Rules, Live the Life You Want, and Change the World. He is introduced by Jenny Blake.

    About the author:

Chris Guillebeau is on a quest to visit every country in the world before he turns 35 (he currently has 50 remaining out of 192) while writing for a small army of remarkable people. His book, The Art of Non-Conformity, and blog of the same name are aimed at helping people live unconventional lives, make their own choices, and change the world. Chris describes himself as a writer, world traveler, entrepreneur, and lifelong learner.

About the book: The Art of Non-Conformity, based on Chris Guillebeau's popular online manifesto "A Brief Guide to World Domination," defies common assumptions about life and work while arming readers with the tools to live differently. This book will help you discover how to live on your own terms by exploring creative self-employment, radical goal-setting, contrarian travel, and embracing life as a constant adventure.

Prior to embarking on his global journey, Chris served as a volunteer executive for a medical charity in West Africa from 2002-2006. He describes it as "thrilling, challenging, and exhausting; all good qualities to have in an adventure." He gave speeches to presidents, hung out with warlords, and continues to share his successes and failures as he travels the world.

""Walking on Eggshells" is a 24-minute documentary about appropriation, creative influence, re-use and intellectual property in the remix age. It is a conversation among various musicians, visual artists, writers and lawyers, all sharing their views on why and how we use and create culture, and how intellectual property law, originally designed to provide people with incentives to create, sometimes hinders creative production far more than it enhances it."

"Kathryn Schulz is an expert on being wrong. The journalist and author of “Being Wrong: Adventures in the Margins of Error,” says we make mistakes all the time. The trouble is that often times being wrong feels like being right. What’s more, we’re usually wrong about what it even means to make mistakes—and how it can lead to better ideas."

"What is Collaborative Consumption? And who is doing it? Collaborative Consumption is the organized sharing, bartering, lending, trading, renting, gifting, and swapping through online and real-world communities. From social lending (Zopa) to car sharing (Zipcar) and co-working (HubCulture), from peer-to-peer rental (Zilok) to collaborative travel (Air BnB) and neighborhood sharing schemes (WeCommune)... people are already using the principles and dynamics of Collaborative Consumption—without even knowing it. Along the way, they are getting the same fulfillment and benefits of actual ownership while saving money and lowering their environmental impact. Today, more and more consumers are opting for access over ownership, and use over possession.

The philosophy behind this idea is not new—carpooling, staying with friends and relatives when traveling, checking a book out from library—are age-old examples of Collaborative Consumption. But today, propelled by web-enabled technologies and economic and environmental imperatives, a surge is taking place with new sharing models and business opportunities emerging every day. The authors explore this phenomenon with numerous examples, and by dividing companies and organizations into three systems (see a detailed list on the following page and on their site):"
