ince iPhone’s launch in 2007, AT&T has grabbed about 3% additional share in the US wireless market. Verizon’s success has been driven by BlackBerry devices like the Storm and some of the latest Android-based devices, such as Motorola’s Droid, gaining traction.
Sprint has historically lacked hit devices in its mobile portfolio. Although it gained some traction in the past from Blackberry Curve, the phone’s popularity could not match with that of Verizon’s Blackberry Storm. Moreover, Sprint’s HTC devices like Touch Diamond and Touch Pro could not sustain the initial enthusiasm generated.
the Bold has already garnered comparisons to Apple's (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone -- but there are a few notable differences. While Jobs & Co. are slowly trying to make headway into the corporate world, their core audience is still top-heavy with tech-gadget completists and trust-fund hipsters.
Meanwhile, BlackBerry's already in business with business, and the new WSJ app is just an extra boost of its Street cred.
NTT DoCoMo began selling the Bold in Japan last week. And so far it has sold about 4,000 devices. Of those devices, NTT DoCoMo says it has received complaints from about 30 users that the phone's keyboard area had heated up,
Still, RIM and DoCoMo decided to suspend sales anyway until they can figure out what is causing the overheating.
"This issue appears to be specifically limited to the BlackBerry Bold devices sold in Japan since last week," the company said. "And sales of BlackBerry Bold devices in other countries are unaffected by this matter."
Motorola and HTC are the two biggest reasons for Android’s success for the second quarter. Based on the US Consumer purchases in the US the top 5 Android phones that put Android on the lead were the (1) Motorola Droid, (2) HTC Droid Incredible, (3) HTC EVO 4G, (4)HTC Hero, and (5) HTC Droid Eris.
RIM strongly aims to get back to the top spot and is coming out soon with the Blackberry 6 OS and Blackberry Torch that will soon offer features such as capacitive touchscreens and a Webkit-based browser that have been a popular feature of the recently released Android phones in the market.
However, its upcoming Blackberry Torch lacks the large screen attraction that is present in the best selling Android devices such as the Droid Incredible and EVO 4G.
The NPD also announced that Verizon Wireless is still the top wireless carrier, bagging 33 percent of the total smartphones sold ,followed by AT&T at 25 percent, Sprint at 12 percent and T-Mobile with 11 percent.
