WHATAs website offshoot of GoodPlanet.org, 6 Billion Others (6BO) is a voluntary narrative database of videos, photo-portraits and written documentation from individuals across the globe. This site provides narratives organized by country, gender, language of contribution, available translations, and 6BO-selected interview themes, as well as a photographic format that allows the user to browse narratives by clicking on a selected picture. WHYBecause the narratives contains emic or insider’s perspective of global life and culture of real individuals, the site encourages—through first hand narratives--the type of intimate, equitable cultural perspective global educators are encouraged to seek out (see Case, 1993; Hanvey, 2004 and Merryfield, 2002). In addition, the site’s organizational format provides a wealth of content for potential lessons. Most importantly, it helps students understand the deep commonalities and human differences between themselves and six billion others. HOWI would begin by exploring 6BO’s range of possibilities by the topic/country of the particular lesson or unit. As an auxiliary to a lesson, the narratives could serve to emphasize existing content. For an existing lesson, I would plan ahead by select and transcribe the videos to be viewed in class. We would 1) read the transcripts in class, 2) watch the videos, 3) use the videos as a prompt for a timed writing response and 4) discuss our responses and how they relate to our theme. As a student-driven activity, we would use the site as a means to attain an emic global perspective and exercise early web-based research skills. I would assign each student a country and topic, and have them prepare a brief presentation on what they learned from whom they learned it. Students could also participate in 6BO by preparing their own responses to particular topics and uploading them.
