This clip shows Scott alone in a studio performing his individual style of dancing in front of the mirror, unaware that Fran, a shy dance student, is secretly watching him. Scott uses every part of this private space to practise, accompanied by an upbeat rhythmic soundtrack.
In this clip Scott and Fran triumph over the rigid rules of the Australian Dancing Federation with their electrifying performance of the paso doble. Although disqualified by the judges for failing to dance 'strictly ballroom' steps, they are inspired by the emotional support provided by Scott's father, Doug. His slow rhythmical handclap reverberates around the auditorium as an act of defiance, to which the audience responds. Scott and Fran resume their performance to the accompaniment of the audience's clapping until the music is restored for the passionate finale.
This short film, an animated story produced for children, is about Mandy who finds a magical pair of jeans that make the wearer dance.
It starts with the title screen 'JITTERBUGS “JIVE” AT SYDNEY TROCADERO. The item then opens with the sound of drums and a close-up of Dick Freeman, band leader and drummer at the Trocadero dancehall. The following sequence shows people energetically dancing in a jitterbug contest arranged especially for Cinesound.
The segment opens with close-ups of women wearing long pantaloons under flared skirts twirling in a dance on Essendon Airport tarmac. The commentary muses on the daring nature of the dance and airport staff look on bemused. The segment ends with a long shot looking down on the dancers as they dance in a circle.
This clip shows footage of the acclaimed dancer and choreographer Graeme Murphy with Janet Vernon, who is his wife and dancing partner. Two short light-hearted choreographed scenes set to classical music are included. These are followed by an interview in which Murphy and Vernon describe their meeting and early collaboration. Dame Margaret Scott, the founding director of the Australian Ballet School gives her perspective on the young Murphy. The clip concludes with footage of Murphy and Vernon in rehearsal at their home.
