    • Folksonomy (also known as collaborative tagging, social classification, social indexing, and social tagging) is the practice and method of collaboratively creating and managing tags to annotate and categorize content. Folksonomy describes the bottom-up classification systems that emerge from social tagging.[1] In contrast to traditional subject indexing, metadata is generated not only by experts but also by creators and consumers of the content.
    • Flickr may not be a good example of folksonomy

    • The obvious disadvantage of this approach is its lack of precision (synonym/antonym control, related terms, context, etc), but in most practical usage scenarios the trade-off between simplicity and precision makes sense.
    • It is an excellent illustration of the advantages offered by simple, emergent and iterative systems over old-skool top-down communications software

  • Tag (metadata) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    • Tags are a "bottom-up" type of classification, compared to hierarchies, which are "top-down". In a traditional hierarchical system (taxonomy), the designer sets out a limited number of terms to use for classification, and there is one correct way to classify each item. In a tagging system, there are an unlimited number of ways to classify an item, and there is no "wrong" choice. Instead of belonging to one category, an item may have several different tags.
    • Search engines can then index them to make relevant materials related to the event searchable in a uniform way. In this case, the tag is part of a controlled vocabulary.
