- Hi, I am trying to figure out an anonymous way for filesharing. The only way I figured was to use a pre-paid credit card for newsgroups and use wireless for the downloads. I was thinking about getting a seedbox but you are only supposed to seed from them aren't you? Just looking for some answers. Anybody that uses a seedbox, it would nice to be in contact because I have a few questions and I would like some personal reviews if you have time. Thanks
- Newsgroups via pre paid credit card and maybe a VPN is your best option. Its as fast as you like and no seeding back. You upload what you like without needing to hang about forever building a seedbase before dropping out. And its practically impossible to get done for infringement unless your ISP actively inspects packets for infringing content which I doubt any of them do. Also theres no peers sitting at the other end logging what data your sending them because you yourself dont actualy send any other individual anything, the newsgroup server does.

- Well, numbers of filesharers are constantly growing, thanks in part to Apple's marketing of their iPod. The bigger the pond, the less likely you are to to be hooked by an angler.
  
  So far, around 94% of those confronted over filesharing have been using Kazaa. So by avoiding Kazaa and being careful not to share too much or too stay connected for too long, then the odds in your favour improve dramatically.

- When I started with newsgroups I used NTL only and got used to how it all worked, but when I signed up to Newshostings unlimited I realised how much I was missing. By configuring Newsleecher to connect to both NTL and Newshosting at the same time, I always got downloads from Newshosting, and rarely anything from NTL.

    Several reasons:
    1 - Unlike P2P networks, Newsgroups weren't originally meant for filesharing. There are many vibrant academic and technical communities on it. It just so happens that some incredibly smart people figured out how to use it to broadcast (that's what it basically boils down to) files.
    2 - News companies like GigaNews have no way to stop posters from posting. Usenet has no real central point of control, as far as I know, and many posters are anonymous and quite nearly untraceable.
    3 - With literally terabytes of NEW information passing through the global network daily, filtering is a monumental, if not impossible, task. Add to that the fact that the material in question must be decoded and assembled (unless you're willing to make assumptions via headers) to ascertain what it is.
    4 - Newsgroup messages are transient - older messages are constantly being cleaned off to make space for newer ones,
  - 1. The fact that there is a lot of legitimate content on the servers does not act as a defence for the hosting of any illegal content.
  - 2/3. "Giganews and others have no control over what is posted on usenet and so ends up on their servers". I can't see how this defence - effectively 'We are unable to police the content on our own servers' - would stand up.
  - At the moment, I'm of the opinion that newsgroup providers have escaped action because:
    
    1. They are businesses not individuals and are so are likely to put up a fight and not rollover.
    
    2. There are bigger fish to fry - Bittorrent, EDonkey, etc.
    
    3. There is 'some' historical legitamacy with newsgroups that the P2P networks don't have, making a case against them less certain.
    
    However it does concern me that as the popularity of newsgroups grows these factors will be of less and less concern to the copyright police when deciding who to go after next.
  - Usenetserver's 3 days for $3. (This is what hooked me on NG's. I'm now on NewsHostings (Unlimited) 1 year plan.
  - But as with most conversations about "infringing" activities, I'll say this: you're most likely to be in the clear (meaning that you're likely not to get sued, not that you're within the bounds of "law") with almost anything you do as long as any of the following apply:
    
    1 - There are millions of persons doing it, so the odds are low (most P2P)
    
    2 - It's private (copying at home, darknets, etc.)
    
    3 - There are so few people doing it that it's not a big enough target
    
    4 - You don't leave obvious breadcrumbs leading back to yourself
    
    By the way, please note my use of the word "likely" above. There are exceptions
  - My philosophy?
    
    Download without fear, always share, and follow the obvious rules
    
    • Not using Fastrack: The majority(96% in 2004) of those getting caught have been using Fastrack (Kazaa, iMesh etc)
    
    • Switching to Usenet
    
    • Using Peerguardian or Protowall with a known firewall
    
    • Not sharing hundreds of Top 40 tracks or newly released movies.
    
    • When choosing mainstream Top 40 stuff, using other ways of getting their music (such as Streaming Shoutcast etc)
    
    • Not leaving your PC on and running P2P application for days or weeks at a time
    
    • Avoiding using other people’s networks (College, work, etc) as they are generally well policed and anxious to avoid implication
    
    • Using removable drives for archived downloads and keep this away from your PC when not in use
    
    • Being cautious against malicious downloads, to avoid downloading a Trojan or a virus by the use an up to date virus checker
    
    • Keeping up to date with what is happening in the world of P2P, as what happens to others can equally affect them
    
    • And taking independent legal advice if things go wrong

    Civil law deals with disputes between people (or companies and people), the police don't enforce it and you don't risk prison if you lose. But it can cost you money.
    
    In the UK and most countries, sharing copyright files for personal purposes is regarded as a civil issue. In the UK and many countries, downloading isn't even considered that.
  - Criminal law deals with the enforcement of the law by the state against an individual. The police enforce that and you do risk going to prison if you go to court and lose
    
    In just about every country commercial filesharing of copyright material is a serious criminal offence.

  Nope. Since relakks connects as a VPN and not Socks, the only way is to disconnect relakks to use your public IP
- Relakks all the way. It became very tiresome scanning for public proxies and more than frustrating trying to get any sort of consistent service from them
