Web readers are persistently weak at judging whether information is trustworthy.
In one study, Donald J. Leu, who researches literacy and technology at the University
of Connecticut, asked 48 students to look at a spoof Web site (http://zapatopi.net/treeoctopus/) about a mythical species known as
the “Pacific Northwest tree octopus.” Nearly 90 percent of them missed the joke
and deemed the site a reliable source. -
“Kids are using sound and images so they have a world of ideas to put together
that aren’t necessarily language oriented,” said Donna E. Alvermann, a professor
of language and literacy education at the University
of Georgia. “Books aren’t out of the picture, but they’re only one way of
experiencing information in the world today.”

What continues to concern me, though, is the paucity of conversation about any
of this in our schools. This is hugely complex, and it requires a strategy and
good pedagogy.

Screen reading is a mind-set, and we should accept its variance from academic
thinking. Nielsen concisely outlines the difference: "I continue to believe in
the linear, author-driven narrative for educational purposes. I just don't
believe the Web is optimal for delivering this experience. Instead, let's praise
old narrative forms like books and sitting around a flickering campfire —
or its modern-day counterpart, the PowerPoint projector," he says. "We should
accept that the Web is too fast-paced for big-picture learning. No problem; we
have other media, and each has its strengths. At the same time, the Web is
perfect for narrow, just-in-time learning of information nuggets — so long
as the learner already has the conceptual framework in place to make sense of
the facts."
