A review of studies reveals that, in fact, positive change in character traits occurs into old age—and the biggest spurt occurs not in childhood, but between ages 18 and 40. People make significant gains in assertiveness, emotional stability, and conscientiousness during these years, found psychologists Brent W. Roberts from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign and Daniel Mroczek from Purdue University in Indiana. And in middle age, people tend to become easier to get along with, as well as more open to new ideas and experiences. Not everyone will evolve, the researchers add; for those who don't seem able to, psychotherapy can help the process. "
